Synopsis: An experimental psychological drama that explores the challenging subject of coming to terms with historical traumas inherited from generations past. Ksawery (Tomasz Tyndyk) is a gender performance artist who finds out from his agent Karolina (Agnieszka Podsiadlik) that his grandfather Jan (Marek Kępiński), with whom he has been close since childhood and who accepts his grandson’s alternative lifestyle, probably murdered a Jewish man and his son at the end of World War II in order to remain in their house. Ksawery and Karolina set out to discover what happened by visiting Jan at his rural home—the probable site of the murder. Eschewing traditional narrative structure and techniques, Wojcieszek’s film is as challenging formally as it is thematically, and leaves the viewer uncomfortable in more ways than one. Having had its premiere at the Berlinale Film Festival, Secret has received a Special Jury Award for Courage at the 2012 Gdynia Film Festival.
